Leslie Zelamsky's "Point of Departure 8" is a 55.75 x 25 x 25 inch sculpture that is constructed with pine, cedar and paint. The piece consists of two parts that connect when the top piece is placed inside the bottom. The top of the piece is carved out to expose a bowl-like space. Shims and slats of wood are glued, nailed, stacked and carved to create this dynamic sculpture with organic curves, hard edges and surprise spaces. While architectural references exist in the form, the piece has a warm and soft quality found in the texture, patterns and spaces that result from Zelamsky's building process. This piece is signed on the bottom and is free-standing.
“Point of Departure 8” is the eighth piece in Zelamsky's “Point of Departure” series where the artist explores how she arrives at a finished piece. Deeply rooted in intuition and spontaneity, each layer is the result of the moment that came before. The “Point of Departure” series also reflects major departures in the artist's personal life that have influenced her arrival in the present.
