Kamal Ahmad

 

Kamal Ahmad is a Kurdish-American artist whose experience of war, genocide, and trauma resulted in a visual exploration of those themes through sculpture, print-making, painting, sound, and smells. 

He is a multidisciplinary visual artist who works in painting, sculpture, video, printmaking, and design. Kamal Ahmad’s recent artwork examines the connection that exists between people, memory, and place, based on his experience of witnessing wars and experiencing the related trauma. After many years of war in Iraq and Syria, many towns have been razed and buildings collapsed on people living inside. Innumerable memories have been lost. The artwork, created using daily materials, are a reconstruction of destroyed cities, towns, and villages and represent the human beings who have been impacted and lost. Kamal also explores the themes of religious and cultural identities among different ethnic groups to share his unique lived experience with viewers.

Kamal Ahmad is Kurdish-American artist, critical thinker, educator, curator and art consultant who lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts. Kamal was born in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan where he received his BFA from Sulaymaniyah University in Kurdistan in 2010.  He received his first MFA in painting from Boston University in 2016 and his second MFA in 2D & 3D from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2019. Kamal’s artwork has appeared at a number of galleries and museums such as MassMoCA, Boston Sculptors Gallery, MUSA Gallery, and Piano Craft Gallery. Kamal has worked as an educator, art technician, designer, curator, exhibition coordinator, and art consultant with the University of Sulaimani, Boston University, MassArt, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Piano Craft Gallery as well as here at Fountain Street.
