Fountain Street Gallery presents an international call for works that explore the concept of taking notice. Have you ever looked at the clock and noticed the time to be exactly 11:11? For many people it represents a single moment in time that encourages reflection and to focus one’s attention on the present. It can be viewed as the link between human and spirit; darkness and light; scarcity and abundance... 

We are looking for work that ranges from the bold and socio-political to the subtle and poetic. It is a call to take a break from the mundane and to look at the bigger picture. Set an intention – make a wish. Pay attention, follow the signs and the creative process, you are being guided towards your purpose. This call is an open question and asks artists to interpret it widely when selecting works to submit.

11:11–Depth of Perception  will be juried Karina Kelley and Bill Stelling, Kelley Stelling Contemporary

Jurors' statement:  All art is ultimately introspective, with the goal of expressing the artist's vision to its intended (and sometimes unintended) audience.  Whether this produces art that is highly political like David Wojnarowicz, or something more ethereal and contemplative like Maya Lin, does not negate the relevance of either.  We look forward to viewing work that is diverse, relevant and speaks to the viewer in fresh, challenging ways. 

Kelley Stelling Contemporary is a gallery dedicated to the presentation of works by emerging and mid-career artists in 2D and 3D formats. Drawing upon the deep pool of talent both in New England and the wider art world, the gallery is a locus for dialogue about art’s place in the community, and the need to nurture, educate and expose its possibilities to a broad mix of artists, collectors and art lovers. Based in downtown Manchester, Kelley Stelling Contemporary provides a much needed venue for an underserved audience. As part of downtown’s revival, Kelley Stelling Contemporary collaborates with area businesses and art institutions such as the Currier Museum of Art and the NH Institute of Art to expose residents and visitors to the rich cultural offerings of Manchester.

Karina Kelley has a degree in fine arts and art history. In 2017, she chaired the Currier Museum’s “Heart of the Arts” Gala, which attracted important members of the arts and business community, and raised a significant sum for art education. Karina previously served as Vice President for the Kimball Jenkins School of Art’s Board of Directors, and as a committee member for the NH Institute of Art Annual Gala. She serves as an Advisory Council member for the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA). She was a recipient of the Union Leader’s “40 Under Forty” 2018 award as one of the state’s brightest young achievers with a record of professional and volunteer accomplishments in New Hampshire.

Bill Stelling brings extensive gallery experience to Kelley Stelling Contemporary. He founded the Fun Gallery in New York City in the early 1980s with Patti Astor. The gallery was an early showcase for the careers of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, among many other notable artists. He maintains strong contacts with contemporary artists and galleries in New York. In New Hampshire, he was one of the founders of ArtFront NH, a pop-up art and performance event in Manchester that drew over 500 people downtown. Bill also sits on the NH State Council for the Arts and the Manchester Cultural Coalition, is vice-chair of the Currier Museum Advisory Council and and is a board member of the American Furniture Masters Institute.

ELIGIBILITY
11:11–Depth of Perception  is open to everyone. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works created in the past three years, which address the theme in some considerable way.

MEDIA
This call is open to any and all media, traditional and nontraditional; two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork is accepted.

ENTRY FEE
The submission fee is $36 for three entries. Two additional entries can be submitted for $10 each. Total max number of entries is five. Fees are non-refundable. Payment is online only via submission application. The application is not complete and will not be considered until payment is received. Submission does not guarantee acceptance.

Fountain Street Core Members may submit three pieces free of charge; Fountain Street Associate Members may submit three pieces for a fee of $12; Fountain Street 2018 Annex members may submit three pieces for a fee of $24. 

ENTRY
Only online submissions and payment will be considered. It is very important you spend time organizing your materials before you begin. You will not be able to make changes once they are submitted. And, you cannot save your progress as you fill out the form and return. It must be done in one sitting, which we anticipate should take 10-15 minutes if you are prepared. (see THE FINE PRINT below for additional details)

Three awards will be distributed.
Jurors’ Choice (x1): one year Annex membership at Fountain Street, a $400 value, plus a free submission to the next Fountain Street call for art.
Honorable Mention (x2): 50% off one year Annex membership at Fountain Street, plus a free submission to the next Fountain Street call for art.

THE FINE PRINT

HOW TO APPLY
Application is online only at www.fsfaboston.com/apply; Applications will be accepted until September 30, 2018. Artists can submit a maximum of 5 pieces and all work must be for sale. All entries are due no later than September 30, 2018 by Midnight EST. Entries not adhering to this procedure will not be juried. Size: 2D works must be no larger than 60” tall or wide. Diptychs/Triptychs are considered one entry and should be united as one image for viewing by our jurors. 3D works can be no larger than 60” tall and 24” deep, and should weigh no more than 75 lbs. Sculpture artists may submit 2 images of each submitted work for consideration. The artist may be asked to provide pedestals, if needed.

Three-dimensional installation work is encouraged. If chosen, beware that installation dates are Wednesday, December 26th through Friday, December 28th, 2018. If installation artwork is chosen by the juror the artist must be available during install dates.

All video or interactive submissions, or video details illustrating an entry, must be in the form of a link to a viewable online copy of each work AND a single representative jpg image. The work should be shown online in its full length. It is understood that online versions of video files may be lower quality than those expected for exhibition in the gallery due to compression and internet formatting. If the spoken language in the video is not English, please provide a translated transcription. If work is accepted, artist is responsible for providing all necessary display and viewing equipment, including, but not limited to: tv/display monitor, media player, USB drive, mounting hardware, remote controls, batteries.

Note that a jpg still-image should still be submitted to represent the entry in addition to the video material, and this filename should include the term 'video'. (see below for example)

Video links should be provided on the entry form for each work in the VIDEO URL section, and should link directly to online or downloadable content that does NOT require a login, password or membership to view. These may be in the form of Youtube, Vimeo, Dropbox, or other similar links. Effort should be made to eliminate confusion or extraneous information that may interfere with the juror viewing of the work. 

Links to video entries must remain valid and active through the notification of jury results.

APPLICATION MATERIALS
Below is a list of materials you will need to be fully prepared:

1. Artist Contact Information. (REQUIRED)
2. A artist biography. The max word count is 75 words. An artist biography talks about your background and is written in 3rd person. (avoiding resume format) Your biography will be printed and displayed with your work if accepted. (REQUIRED)
3. A artist statement. The max word count is 150 words. The format is up to you, but we recommend you either speak about the work you are submitting or what drives your artistic practice as a whole. Your artist statement will be printed and displayed with your work if accepted. (REQUIRED)
4. Artist CV/Resume (OPTIONAL)
5. Up to five high resolution files (300 dpi, JPEG, CMYK, 1024 pixels wide).
6. Captions for the files, including Title, Medium, Dimensions (in inches) and Price. (REQUIRED)
7. Payment information (REQUIRED)

Before starting your application make sure you have all your information together. To apply you will need the following information:

NOTIFICATION
Accepted artists will be listed on the Fountain Street Fine Art website (http://www.fsfaboston.com/apply/) by Monday, October 29, 2018. No phone calls or emails, please. Upon notification of acceptance: artists allow Fountain Street to use accepted images for promotional and press needs (including social media) for the exhibition. The artist retains all rights to their images.

ACCEPTED WORKS
All works selected for the exhibition must be dry, clean, finished, wired and ready to hang. No saw toothed hangers or clip frames will be accepted. Canvases need not have frames, but should have clean or finished edges and be wired for hanging. For accepted video work, the artist is responsible for providing all necessary display and viewing equipment, including, but not limited to: display monitor, DVD player, USB drive, mounting hardware, remote controls, batteries. Works not adhering to this protocol will not be hung, even if selected by our juror. The juror reserves the right to decline any work that differs markedly from its digital representation, including framing that the juror feels detracts from the overall cohesiveness of the exhibition.

DELIVERY
Work to be shipped to the gallery must be delivered by 5 PM Friday, December 21, 2018. (NO STYROFOAM PACKING PEANUTS IN SHIPPED BOXES.) Work being shipped can not be delivered to the gallery before December 12th. Hand delivered work by the artists or a representative must be brought to the gallery on Friday-Sunday, December 21-23, 2018, 12:00 PM-5:00 PM. Works not delivered in time will not be hung.

SALES
Fountain Street receives 40% commission and the artist receives 60% on all sales of the work.

PICK UP OF UNSOLD WORKS
WORK MAY NOT BE REMOVED BEFORE THE END OF THE SHOW. The artist must arrange for pickup during the dates and times stated below. Pickup times are Sunday, January 27, 2019, 5:00–8:00 PM and Monday, January 28, 2019 between 12:00 PM–4:00 PM. Artists are responsible for scheduling shipped artwork for pickup and must provide return shipping labels and materials: Monday, January 28, 2019 between 12:00 PM–4:00 PM. Artwork not retrieved by this deadline will incur a storage charge of $5 per day. After 30 days the work will be considered abandoned and become property of the gallery.

LIABILITY
Fountain Street is insured for catastrophic damage, and will use the utmost care in handling artworks, but accepts no responsibility for damage or loss not covered by our policy. It is strongly advised that artists insure their own work.
