THE ANNEX

November, 2019

Artists Susan Greer Emmerson and Capucine Bourcart invite us to experience worlds outside our own through painting, assemblage and collage.
Shapes and vibrant colors take us through representational and abstracted life experiences.
It’s an exercise in seeing the spaces in-between and opening our eyes to our reality and imagination.

The ANNEX is a section of the gallery where we feature work by regional artists.

Susan Greer Emmerson

For Susan Greer Emmerson’s most recent body of work, the imagery is that of creating and destroying; of depicting the horrible violence that natural storms, now worsened by human mistakes, can do to our structural environment and to our fellow humans.  Her wall sculptures depict disheveled, broken surfaces where Tyvek painfully peels away like paint or skin, exposing a raw inner core.  Everyday objects become precious; their bits and pieces become signifiers of the lost reassurance of a safe and intact home.  She manipulates Tyvek so that it jumps off the wall to become an object; its organic shapes echo waves, wind, and the chaos of storms. Her work exists in the space between image and object; between the picture and the palpable, between science and the human story.

Emmerson has exhibited extensively throughout the Midwest and Boston area. She also has performed duties as a juror and a co-curator, and has four times been awarded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, as well as a residency at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts.  Originally from the Midwest, where she practiced for nearly two decades as an ear, nose and throat surgeon, she received her BFA in Painting from Illinois State University and her MFA from Lesley University College of Art and Design in Boston. Her work is found in the permanent collections of the Grove Hall Public Library in Boston and the Bloomington-Normal Transportation Center and City Hall in Illinois.  She is a member of the Kingston Gallery in Boston and an Annex member at Fountain Street.

Capucine Bourcart

Capucine Bourcart builds collages inspired by fragments and details of images with various textures, transparencies, and unique colors. Her goal is to create a dynamic tension between the straightforward representation of the subject, though formally deconstructed, and the abstract composition of the whole. She reveals hidden and potential meanings by combining techniques such as photography and painting using photo-collage, cutting, layering, and sewing.

Bourcart is fascinated by details, colors, and textures and is inspired by personal interactions, social issues, and both urban and natural landscapes. She structures her creative process with visual fragments and themes that she collects in her daily life, travels, and relationships. The humor in her work, creates distance and enhances the impact of the chosen theme. By focusing on intimate detail and the specific character of a chosen subject, she questions and probes its beauty in order to reveal, reconsider, or condemn its clichés.

Originally from France, Capucine Bourcart has called Harlem her home for the past 13 years. With Vietnamese origins and growing up in Alsace her multicultural background has led to her curiosity and inspired her creations. She has refined her photography skills through classes at the International Center of Photography in New York, where she was also an Assistant Teacher. She was an award-winning artist at FLUX Public Art Projects in 2016 and received the UNIQLO Park Expressions Grand in 2017.
